What a perfect vacation at HCB! We arrived on 4/10/2010 and stayed until 4/17/2010. Everything was so smooth from the arrival in St. Kitts, being met by Daisy and Soloman who escorted us to the Ferry and then meeting Bernard Weeks (Biddy) off the Ferry in Nevis. We requested that Biddy take us to the grocery store before we checked in to Williwah and that was a good thing. We provisioned with some must have breakfast and snack items and went back a few days later to pick up what we were missing. Ram's is where we shopped and even though things are pricey, they have all you are looking for and then some.
We arrived at HCB to be greeted by Kathryn who was responsible for all our travel arrangements from day one! She handled things so efficiently and pleasantly and we were thankful for all she did for us to include wonderful dinner recommendations, reservations, a tour of some of the other bungalows, etc. She is a true gem and HCB are very fortunate to have such a loyal and hardworking manager - and Steve her husband was always around the property tending to guests requests for any issues from maintenance to mosquito netting - another gem and a great couple!
Williwah was a dream come true and it was just what we were looking for on our first Caribbean vacation. No hustle and bustle, no resort "big" feeling just simple, PRIVATE, and so relaxing. I think we will be hard pressed to think of vacationing anywhere else to be honest. Having our own pool was the best, being able to cook and fend for ourselves in between swimming, sunning, reading, napping was just perfect. The kitchen is very well equipped and we lacked for nothing. While we were there the breeze was quite strong (where your sunblock) and it definitely kept all the bugs away. There was one day when the breeze stopped and it became humid and buggy but we lowered our net early in the day, left all the lights inside the bungalow off while we ventured out to dinner and when we returned we snuck in successfully by flashlight and had a great night sleep - bug free. The next day the breeze was back and we were ready to Lime again.
We ate at several places and not one bad meal. Oualie Beach once for Conch Chowder which was excellent, Miss June's is a must due experience which Kathryn can arrange (what fun we had with about 10 or so couples from HCB - so much fun!), Rumours Bar and Grill for their tasty Caribbean Buffet was a favorite being able to try Goat Water and Souse was well worth it. We ate at the Mt. Nevis Hotel one night and had a very good Mexican dinner, although it was our first day there and the long travel day took it's toll so we didn't enjoy the wonderful atmosphere as much as we would have if we were rested. Grilled Lobster Tails at the Yachtsmen Grill was very fun and very good but on the expensive side. Our absolute favorite was Grilled Lobster at LIMES. Randy the owner is so personable and attentive and we loved the open air atmosphere overlooking Pinney's Beach. We started first at Sunshines for Killer Bees (just wonderful) and when we were told they had no lobster we moved over to Limes and were we glad. Do not miss Limes for sure.
Another must is to take a sail on the Caona with Captian Lennox and Travis. It is a 47' Catamaran out of Oualie Beach. We did a private charter with our bungalow neighbors (they arranged it all) and it was a highlight of our trip. Great people, a few rum punches, wonderful sailing breezes what more can you ask for. Another must is touring the island with Biddy the taxi guy for a 1/2 day. He is so gracious and we really learned a lot of the island's history, local happenings and we could have never learned all we did on our own. Had a great lunch that day at Golden Rock. We did not miss renting a car at all, Biddy is reasonable and well worth hiring if driving around is not your thing.
Nevis is such a wonderful island, very laid back, no crowds and rushing around, just what the independent traveler would look for. We are dreaming of the time when we can return and we hope it won't be too long! Thanks to everyone for such a great experience.
